What comes to mind when someone mentions the exhaust system? Do you think they are referring to the tailpipe and muffler? Yes, the exhaust system includes those parts, but it’s also a detailed system of chambers and pipes that help protect you and your passengers from breathing in harmful gases. In addition, it minimizes the impact of those harmful gases on the environment. In this blog post, you will learn about the exhaust system and the signs you need exhaust system repair. Also discussed will be why you should take care of any exhaust system repairs right away along with ways you can maintain this engine system.
When your vehicle is running, the gasoline and air inside the engine ignite (also known as combustion). As the combustion process occurs, certain gases are created that are noxious. As the gases pass through the exhaust system, they are turned into gases that are less toxic. If any part of the exhaust system is faulty, you risk being exposed to dangerous gases like carbon monoxide. If the exhaust system isn’t fixed, eventually you may feel sick or experience symptoms of brain fatigue, aches, lightheadedness, flu-like symptoms, and queasiness. You may even fall unconscious.
What parts make up the exhaust system?
There are five main parts that comprise the exhaust system:
- Exhaust Manifold – This part connects at the cylinder head and is responsible for collecting the gases that are created during combustion and delivering them to the exhaust pipe.
- Oxygen Sensor – There are a number of different sensors in your vehicle that are continually measuring and communicating with the onboard computer. Here, an oxygen sensor measures how much oxygen is in the exhaust gases. The onboard computer will then adjust the ratio of fuel to air based on the sensor’s readings.
- Exhaust Pipes – They start at the front of the engine at the exhaust manifold and carry the gases through the rest of the exhaust system.
- Catalytic Converter – Just like its name implies, this part is responsible for converting carbon monoxide and other harmful gases into water vapor and less harmful gases.
- Muffler – This part “muffles” the mini explosions generated during combustion of the fuel/air mixture.
Signs You Need Exhaust System Repair
If you notice any of these signs, your vehicle needs exhaust system repair:
- You smell exhaust fumes while driving – This is quite dangerous to you and your passengers. If you smell exhaust fumes while driving, the exhaust system is leaking noxious gases into the passenger compartment. This needs to be repaired right away.
- You hear hissing, popping or loud rumbling noises – If your vehicle starts to sound louder and louder with noises coming from underneath, most likely you will need to replace the muffler.
- You are getting less gas mileage – This could mean the oxygen sensor needs to be replaced.
The “Check Engine Light” and Your Vehicle’s Exhaust System
The Check Engine or the Service Engine Soon light alerts you when there is a problem with your vehicle’s emissions system. If the light comes on and stays on, you should have your vehicle checked and fixed as soon as possible. By delaying Check Engine light repairs, you could end up having to replace more expensive parts, like the catalytic converter
Exhaust System Maintenance
Since much of the exhaust system is located on underbody of your vehicle, the biggest problem will be from rust and corrosion due to road salts. When you wash your vehicle, remember to include the underbody, especially during winter when there are salts on the road. Have the exhaust system inspected on a regular basis. Fix minor problems before they become more costly repairs.
